Erbil, Kurdistan – The Deputy Marshal of Poland’s Wielpolska Province, Leszek Wojtasiak, and the Republic of Poland’s Ambassador to Iraq, Stanislaw Smolen, led a delegation of government, business and university representatives on a visit to both Erbil and Suleimaniah last week in order to explore opportunities for cooperation in the civil, economic and educational sectors.

The Head of the KRG Department of Foreign Relations, Minister Falah Mustafa, met with the delegation during their visit to discuss building stronger ties in both the public and private sectors between the Kurdistan Region and the Republic of Poland.

“Having just signed a Declaration of Cooperation with Poland’s Malopolska Region last November, which highlighted the commitment of both sides to establish a formal exchange of visits and cooperation, we are very pleased to welcome and encourage the development of stronger relations with representatives from other parts of Poland as well,” Minister Mustafa said.

Deputy Marshal Wojtasiak said “There is a strong desire amongst Polish businesses to be more engaged in Kurdistan,” adding that much could be gained from coordination between each side’s municipal and educational sectors as well.

Ambassador Stainslow Smolen provided an overview of Poland’s policy for engaging in economic progress and its strategies for enhancing international relations, adding that the establishment of an official representation for the Republic of Poland in the Kurdistan Region has reached its final stages, and an office is expected to open in the near future.

Minister Mustafa praised these initiatives, saying that the ongoing development and progress of Kurdistan is greatly assisted by the engagement of the international community in the Region.

“There is no doubt that there is much that we can learn from the experience of Polish experts in a variety of fields. We would like to see greater Polish investment in the private sector and increased coordination between our provincial and city governments and between our chambers of commerce and industry as well,” he said.

Both sides also discussed the need to strengthen bilateral relations through holding more regular meetings between political leaders and talked about potential opportunities for partnership initiatives in agriculture, industry, tourism and education.

The group also attended a forum with the Erbil Chamber of Commerce and Industry and met with the KRG Minister of Higher Education, Dr Ali Saeed, the Governor of Erbil, Mr Nawzad Hadi, and the Governor of Suleimaniah, Mr Bahroz Qashany, as well as a number of other KRG representatives and provincial officials in both Erbil and Suleimaniah during their three day visit.

Amongst other officials, the delegation included the Deputy Head of Mission of Poland’s Embassy to Iraq, Counselor Jerzy Zielinski, and their meeting at the KRG Department of Foreign Relations was also attended by the Department’s Deputy Head, Mr Karwan Jamal.
