President Barzani receives US Delegation

Salahadin, Kurdistan Region of Iraq, (KRG.org) – National Security Adviser to Vice President Joe Biden, Mr Antony Blinken, led a delegation to Kurdistan was part of a larger trip to Iraq and Turkey on Thursday.

President Masoud Barzani received the delegation at his office in Salahadin to discuss the ongoing political crisis in Iraq as well as developments in Syria and other parts of the broader region.

Mr Blinken confirmed the United States' continued commitment to helping solve Iraq's issues democratically and in accordance with the Iraqi Constitution and discussed a number of topics that were raised in meetings during his recent visit to Baghdad, expressing his hope that the US could be of assistance in obtaining a negotiated resolution to the political crisis.

President Barzani welcomed the delegation and expressed his appreciation for President Obama and Vice President Biden’s ongoing support of the democratic process in Iraq, reiterating the importance of the constitution as the foundation for resolving outstanding issues.

The President also confirmed that he remains open to the possibility of meeting with other Iraqi leaders in order to improve the situation for all of Iraq’s people, but he emphasized that genuine political reform and true partnership must be the basis for any acceptable solution.

The current acting Head of the US Embassy in Baghdad, Chargé d’Affaires Stephen Beecroft, and the US Consul General in Erbil, Mr Paul Sutphin, accompanied the US delegation in their visit, and the KRG Head of the Department of Foreign Relations, Minister Falah Mustafa Bakir also attended the meeting.
